Food for happiness: the best treats for the best dogs

What do you do when your internships have been canceled because of the global pandemic? Brothers Kaleb and Kolby Rush decided to create their own real-world experiences. Risk management major Kaleb, Class of 2023, and his brother Kolby, who recently graduated from Penn State, combined their complementary skills and interests to start Saint Rocco’s Treats.

Named after the Catholic patron saint of dogs, Saint Rocco’s Treats produces fresh-baked, high-quality dog treats.

“Our ultimate goal was to open a dog treat and food kitchen that uses only human-grade ingredients and offers an omnichannel opportunity for pick up, drive-thru or home shipping by ordering via our website and app,” says Kaleb. After achieving their original goal, the brothers are doing even more to perfect their craft.

Ensuring that pets have access to top-quality food has been part of the Rush family for generations. The Rush’s father and grandfather have worked in the meat and dog treat manufacturing industry, making them the perfect mentors, providing key advice to help the brothers create their own unique recipes.

“Not only is it important for Saint Rocco’s Treats to provide a treat that leaves our furry friends drooling, but we also believe every dog owner should understand and recognize the many positive benefits that come with feeding their dog high-quality snacks,” says Kaleb. “These impacts include higher energy levels, no digestive issues and finally having treats that motivate even the pickiest eaters! Nothing better than a waggin’ tail.”

What the Rush Brothers gained in business experience this past year has been immeasurable. They have learned everything from e-commerce, finances, marketing, supply chain and a long list of others. They have overcome challenges including determining the correct recipe mix, inventory management and testing packaging to ensure the treats stay fresh for the two-month shelf life.

Taking care of dogs of all breeds is important to the Rush Brothers. They are committed to donating $1 for every 1lb of treats sold. They have donated to a local dog rescue Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) in Reading, PA.

“PAD’s mission is to rescue dogs, train and rehabilitate them to become service dogs for people with disabilities,” explains Kaleb. “It is an amazing organization, and we feel lucky to provide all the funds we can to allow them to focus on fulfilling their mission.”

Saint Rocco’s Treats will continue to grow with the full support of the Temple community. Kaleb connected with Temple’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, Entrepreneurship Student Association, and Professional Sales Organization—all of which provided an enriching platform of mentors, courses and resources to bring Saint Rocco’s Treats to the next development stage.

Through all of the growing pains and learning curves of being an entrepreneur, Kaleb recalls, “The best feeling is seeing the satisfaction and love that our furry friends have for the treats we provide.” To get your dog the only treats they’ll ever want or need, Saint Rocco’s Treats is offering 20% off your first order to the Temple Owls community with promo code: OWL.
