Baking up a recipe for future success

Many people started hobbies in 2020 due to being at home during the pandemic. However, Class of 2023 business management major Torri Burrell took her hobby to a new level.

She always had a love for baking—at 12 years old, she started out making simple cakes for family gatherings. However, Burrell wanted to master the art of cake making and decorating, so three years ago she watched YouTube videos to learn new and easier techniques.

With these new skills literally at her fingertips, Burrell was inspired to develop a business plan. This was also a fun way to raise money for her next step in life, investing in an acting career. Thus, K’Tor Kreations was born.

“I did not run into any challenges starting during the pandemic because people were having quarantined birthdays and drive by birthdays,” says Burrell. “Families were still celebrating and needed cakes and decorations.”

There’s meaning behind the company moniker: K’Tor is Burrell’s nickname. She added Kreations because the cakes and party services are her own unique creations. Burrell not only makes cakes, vanilla being the most requested flavor, she has expanded to themed treat boxes, balloon garlands, room décor and event packages for all special occasions including weddings and baby showers.

I am proud of how far I have come within this past year,” says Burrell. “When I look back at the cakes I made when I started, I am excited at how much better and artistic they have become.”

Balancing school and a business often requires a support system. Burrell credits her family, especially her mom, for providing guidance when she needs help brainstorming ideas, or for staying up late at night with her on busy days.

Burrell also found inspiration from the Fox School and the many Temple entrepreneurs who share their stories during seminars and workshops.

What is next for K’Tor Kreations?

My goal for the next five years is to have a bakery stand or storefront to serve up delicious sweets and party decorations to the community,” says Burrell. Well, wouldn’t that be the icing on the cake for this ambitious Fox entrepreneur.
