While the transition from dorm life to off-campus living can be exciting, it can also be stressful, confusing and raises a number of questions for both students and their families.
Temple University is committed to helping make this process as easy as possible by providing up-to-date information on housing, and transportation options and by helping students experience everything that Philadelphia has to offer beyond the doors of campus residence halls.
Here are a few suggestions for getting started on an off-campus housing search, as well as a few tools to help students find the perfect place to continue their careers at Temple.
Where to start your search
Recently, the university launched The Best Nest Program, an online and interactive resource designed to allow students the ability to search for housing that is not only affordable but that meets “certain safety, security and good neighbor criteria.”
Safety, security and good neighbor standards
All properties listed on The Best Nest Program website must be Cherry and/or Diamond Level certified, standards designed to ensure that all spaces are located in continually monitored neighborhoods, complete with surveillance cameras and adequate outdoor lighting to provide residents with both comfort and safety.
Find a roommate and read property reviews
The Best Nest also allows students to search for and connect with prospective roommates and view information on notable locations (including The Wagner Free Institute of Science, The New Freedom Theatre, and The Cecil B. Moore Library). It provides property reviews from previous tenants/students, offers sample questions for landlords and advice on monthly and yearly budgets, as well as gives students access to information on parking and affordable public transportation.

Attend an Off-Campus Living Fair
Additionally, the university will now also hold Off-Campus Living Fairs in both the Fall and Spring semesters, where students and their families can browse options, inquire and get answers to questions in real-time from our staff. The Spring event will take place on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bell Tower (rain date Monday, April 24).
