Experiential learning (EL) is a hallmark of the Fox School programs and ensures our students learn by doing. We prepare students for success in today’s digital, global economy by providing hands-on, experiential learning opportunities throughout their education. You can learn about EL at Fox here.
Each year, we honor Fox faculty who engage with their students’ learning using EL activities; awards are given for different levels of student engagement: Tier 1 awards recognize use of hypothetical projects, Tier 2 awards recognize projects conducted outside the classroom, and Tier 3 awards recognize projects which require students to directly interact with industry.
In the 2022/2023 academic year, we honored the following faculty for their EL work:
- Crystal Reeck, Ph.D., for her consumer data analytics course, which uses 29 different EL activities to ensure student learning, including two Harvard Business School cases, 14 hypothetical cases and 13 cases using real data.
- Cynthia Axelrod, CFA, for managing The Owl Fund, which is a student-managed investment fund, giving students hands-on, real-world experience managing a live portfolio.
- Leora Eisenstadt, J.D., for her pre-law internship seminar course, which involves placing students in paid or unpaid internships. Under the direction of a mentor, the students work approximately eight to 10 hours per week with a private law firm, government agency, non-profit agency, in-house counsel/compliance department or judicial chambers on law-related projects.
Experiential Learning Impacts Our Students
Fox/MIS student Ally Yu presented her CARAS project grant research at the Temple Symposium for Undergraduate Research and Creativity. Yu used her CARAS project grant to create WebORA, an organic chemistry teaching tool designed for students with disabilities. Yu worked closely with her mentor in the chemistry department, Steven Fleming, to design a website to showcase the Organic Reaction Animations (ORA) developed by Fleming. After her CARAS research experience, Yu hopes to pursue a career in UX & product design with a focus on accessibility. Check out WebORA here.
