SPO Spotlight: Temple Professional Sales Organization aids students from classroom to closing

While you might not be able to major in sales at Temple University’s Fox School of Business, there’s a group at the school that can still offer you an opportunity to learn about the subject.

Meet the Professional Sales Organization (PSO) student professional organization (SPO).

A long-standing SPO, the student group specializes in developing the skills, knowledge and career preparedness for students looking to enter the sales industry. The SPO does this through a unique way by offering its Five-Step Sales Process Bootcamp. The program, developed within the earliest iterations of the SPO by alumni and group advisors, equips members with comprehensive sales and negotiations training.

Co-presidents Darcy Reese, class of 2027, and Pearce Flory, class of 2027, view it as a pillar of the SPO’s efforts.

“We truly find our SPO sales curriculum offers the best real-world sales training available at Temple University,” Reese said.

“Not only are students joining our chapter to find like-minded peers and a community that will help them grow, but we are also offering them an integral education into the world of sales—all while growing professionally, too.

“We believe the sales education can be benefit anyone in the business school.”

Since they are sales certified through their own completion of the program, Reese and Flory lead the trainings, which has been designed with intentionality.

“Our members are taught sales processes that have been handcrafted by alumni of our group, which have identified what skills are necessary within the professional world,” Flory said.

“We have confidence in the education we are offering our members because it’s been tested and proven to be effective.”

He added, “we help students develop sales skills so they have acquired another skill upon graduation.”

Inside the organization, a variety of majors are represented. While mainly attracting those majoring in finance, marketing, management information systems and business management, they also have members majoring in computer science and sport management.

Professional development opportunities are another key element of their offerings. In addition to speaker series events (which have featured personnel from top companies such as Fastenal, CDWand PLS Logistics Services) and resume building workshops, it hosted the “Fox Sales Challenge” event in December.

“Our biggest event, the ‘Fox Sales Challenge,’ is where we officially certify competitors who have been through our sales training program,” Reese explained.

“We are grateful that sponsors and alumni come to the event and support the hard work of our members. It’s a great chance to celebrate our semester’s worth of work, practice real-world sales interaction and network.”

The Fox School community takes note of the impact of the SPO’s presence.

“For over a decade now, I’ve had the privilege to watch amazing Fox students work together to create and lead a world-class organization in the Professional Sales Organization,” said Tony Petrucci, associate professor and faculty advisor to the group.

“Not only does the organization conduct its own detailed sales training, but it also ensures students in the group have a strong community and chance to pursue opportunities such as internships, networking and competitions to practice their skills.

“I couldn’t be prouder of all the leaders we’ve had over the years to include the current presidential leadership of Darcy and Pearce.”
