Life on campus in the summer

After a long school year, summer at Temple is finally here! While many students head home, the campus keeps its arms open for Owls and provides many amenities for those living and/or working in the city. Whether you are a student taking summer classes looking for a quiet place to work, or hanging out with friends around campus in search of food to eat, here are the places that are open and operational. 

1. Charles Library

Looking for a place to get away from the summer heat, read a book and get some work done? Check out Charles Library! This new building, recently opened in 2019, has four floors full of study rooms, free-to-use computers and books you can finally cross off your reading list. The general hours of operation are:

  • Mon: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Tue: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Wed: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Thurs: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Fri: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Sat: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Sun: 12:00 am – 8:00 pm

2. Tech Center

With over 10 breakout rooms, hundreds of computer workstations, 150 software applications and a multitude of wireless printers, the TECH Center offers a quiet place to work and focus. Whether you’re looking for a specialty lab for video editing, music and graphic design or a WhisperRoom booth suitable for recording podcasts, vocal narrations and other recording sessions, the TECH is available to all Owls throughout the week. Its hours of operation are: 

  • Mon: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Tue: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Wed: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Thurs: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Fri: 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
  • Sat: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Sun: 12:00 am – 8:00 pm

3. SAXBY’S

When searching for refuge on a hot summer day, make sure you don’t forget about Saxbys. Open 7:30 am – 5:00 pm on weekdays and 8:00 am – 4:00 pm on weekends, the Liacouras Walk cafe is the perfect place to drink iced coffee, have a French toast muffin and chill with friends. Note that the Alter Hall location is closed for the summer.

4. Howard Gittis Student Center

Getting hungry? The Howard Gittis Student Center Food Court has got you covered! Chick-fil-A will be open this summer from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm Monday through Friday and closed on weekends. The Cherry Pantry will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, continuing its mission to reduce food insecurity in the Temple University community. 

5. Food Trucks 

One of the best perks of being on campus over the summer is the array of food trucks. From smoothies to burritos, here’s a list of the trucks open on weekdays around campus!

  • For your daily dose of fresh fruit and veggies, grab a fruit salad or a made-to-order smoothie at the Fruit Salad & Smoothie Truck.
  • Ernie’s Truck offers a variety of sandwiches, cheesesteaks and more!
  • The Halal Food Trucks on N 13th Street are a perfect place to grab a gyro or platter. 
  • Cha Cha has Korean classics from barbecue to bibimbap, as well as a selection of Japanese-inspired rice and noodle dishes.
  • The Sexy Green Truck has a delicious array of foods from tacos to burrito bowls to their famous churros. 
  • Los Jimenez Mexican is a Mexican food staple on Temple’s campus and one of the few trucks open on Saturdays!
  • Brother’s Pizza offers traditional lunch pickings with three main menu options—wraps, pizza and pizza rolls.

6. Gyms

Staying active during the summer can be difficult, but Temple’s facilities are open and ready for you to use. With hundreds of weights, treadmills and numerous courts for recreational use, Temple encourages its students to make the most of its facilities throughout the summer months. 

Here are the hours of operation for all gyms around campus: 

  • IBC Student Recreation Center: 7:00 am – 7:00 pm
  • ASTAR Weight Room: 7:00 am – 7:00 pm
  • ASTAR Climbing Wall: CLOSED
  • 3rd Floor Rec Courts in Pearson & McGonigle Halls: 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm 
  • Pearson Hall Pool: 7:00 am- 9:00 am
  • Geasey Turf: 12:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Campus Recreation Main Office: 8:30 am – 4:00 pm

7. Fox School of Business

Last but certainly not least, the Fox School will remain open during the summer to ensure Owls have the best possible resources at their disposal. Breakout Rooms and Graduate Student Computer Labs will be open from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, making sure students always have a place to focus.
