When Caroline Marshall, BBA ’23, began to consider her college choices, she had a few ideas about what she was looking for.
“I really wanted to be in an urban environment,” says Marshall, who grew up in Long Island, New York. “And I really wanted a school that was big and had a lot of pride.
“Temple checked off those boxes.”
Now four years later and days away from graduating from Temple University’s Fox School of Business with a degree in accounting, Marshall is certain she made the right decision.
Marshall is grateful she’s been living in a city filled with a wide variety of neighborhoods and gathered friends along the way who were eager to share their stories of being raised within miles of Main Campus.
“I love hearing about how they grew up and the differences in the neighborhoods,” she says.
She’s also very happy with the place she refers to as her “second home” (more commonly known as the Fox School’s Department of Accounting in Alter Hall).
“I’m always here,” she says from her workstation within the department. “I have made fantastic connections in this department through my professors.”
Her network building hasn’t stopped at the faculty. She’s also helped lift her fellow students through her work as a peer tutor in the department, primarily assisting students taking the financial accounting class.
She’s also been recognized for her desire to help others succeed in the classroom. In 2021, she was named a Diamond Peer Teacher. Undergraduates who are accepted into this program are given the opportunity to work with a faculty mentor for a semester and provide supplemental instruction in lower-level and GenEd courses.
“It’s a university-wide appointment,” she says, adding that it was an honor to take part in the program. “It’s the highest achievement you can get as an undergraduate teaching assistant.”
While she has embraced her leadership roles at the Fox School, Marshall also has dedicated her time to helping others outside of the Temple community.
“I’m involved in a community organization called CEIBA,” she says. “It’s a Latino community organization, so we primarily help Latino individuals, but really anyone can come.
“We do free tax preparation and I’m the head of that. I coordinate with all the volunteers.”
While she’s enjoyed her time exploring neighborhoods and opportunities in Philadelphia, Marshall will soon be looking for a new place to live when she begins work in New York City as an internal audit and advisory consultant with Protiviti.
Naturally, she has some ideas about what she is looking for in the future.
“I want to start work and eventually work my way toward the CIA exam, which is a Certified Internal Auditor, because my job consulting is in internal audit,” she says.
But before she goes anywhere, she’s heading to Las Vegas with friends for a short trip and hoping that more good fortune comes her way at one of the resort’s casinos.
“I’ve got to pay New York City rent somehow,” she laughs.
