Exploring the Interplay of Military Experience and Agile Mindset in Software Development

Two people wearing green military fatigues tap fists together.

Brian Belisle examines how military service influences Agile mindset adoption in software teams. In Study One, Belisle uses thematic analysis of Agile practitioners’ interviews to identify adaptability, collaboration, communication, and uncertainty management as core mindset traits. Study Two then compares 12 veterans and 12 non-veterans via crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis and Pulakos et al.’s eight-dimension adaptability framework, supported by Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact tests. Veterans excel in structured decision making, resilience under stress, and crisis management, whereas non-veterans rely more on creative problem solving and rapid learning. Ultimately, both groups succeed in Agile settings but benefit from customized onboarding and training. This dissertation offers guidance on integrating veterans effectively and enriches adaptability theory.
