The industrial internet of things (IIoT) is an ecosystem designed to collect, monitor, and analyze industrial operations. As the IIoT gains importance, manufacturers are increasingly adopting IIoT-based platforms for preventative maintenance (PM). Manufacturers can either compete by offering enhanced after-sales services or adopt a “coopetitive” strategy by opening platforms to maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) firms. Currently, there is limited research on the impact of IIoT platforms for PM. Dr. Kumar and his team examine when do IIoT platforms benefit manufacturers through PM and what relationship should they adopt regarding MROs. The findings provide valuable insights for manufacturers, MROs, and policymakers regarding platform establishment, strategic decisions, and welfare impacts.
