Is it Greener on the Other Side of the State Line? The Attractiveness of U.S. States for Cannabis Industry Expansion

Large farming fields divided by a river.

Jennifer Marie Jones uses two studies to show how CAGE distance shapes cannabis expansion across the United States. Study 1 regresses the presence of the 100 top-revenue firms on cultural, administrative, geographic and economic factors. With adult-use prevalence as culture, only legal status matters and the model explains 38 percent of variation; replacing prevalence with voter support lifts fit to 51 percent and highlights culture and border count. Study 2 analyzes 1 500 firm-state pairs. Firms favor states with matching laws; one legal step halves entry odds. Distance deters moves, similar GDP helps slightly, and culture or value-chain role does not matter in this analysis.
