Know Your Users via Image Analytics Before Developing Posts: Data-Driven Optimization Framework to Enhance Social Media Engagement

This study, by Subodha Kumar and colleagues, looks at how the objects inside a company’s social media photos affect user engagement. Researchers used AI to detect “main” features (like a couch in a furniture ad) and “extra” background details (like a plant or vase) in Instagram and Facebook posts. They found that adding more extra details boosts engagement, but the pattern differs by platform: on Instagram, engagement rises then falls after about 7–8 extra features, while on Facebook it keeps climbing. The study also built a budgeting tool showing that companies get better results by considering these patterns and costs, rather than just picking platforms based on user numbers alone.
