Uncovering the Neural Processes of Privacy

Surveillance Cameras

People are increasingly aware of their online information being tracked, yet they continue to share private details, often against their privacy preferences. Dr. Reeck and her team aimed to help individuals protect their data in ways that align with their desires. They explored how people evaluate the tradeoffs between privacy and sharing information by studying brain activity during decision-making moments. Based on their findings, they developed a tool that alerts individuals to the risks involved in sharing their information at the time of decision-making. The tool significantly increased the likelihood that people would protect their privacy.
