Temple Beta Alpha Psi President on creating future career paths

We have gotten used to doing a lot of things online—grocery shopping, working, learning and more. For Class of 2023 Honors student Rose Listman, that list included joining the national scholastic and professional fraternity Beta Alpha Psi and becoming an officer in the organization. From candidacy and induction to earning a seat at the table, Listman has had a fully virtual experience in her fraternity. In the 2020-2021 academic year, she served as director of communications.

“Even though there were no in-person social events, I had the opportunity to meet a lot of members, network with recruiters, and even apply for an officer position. I am now going to be president this year,” says Listman.

A Dresher, Pa. native, Listman found getting involved in student professional organizations (SPOs) helped her easily adjust to college life. She is involved in the Fox Accounting Association, Business Honors Student Association, Association for Information Systems and Beta Alpha Psi.

Listman enthusiastically dove into these SPOs because she always knew she wanted to study business, particularly accounting. She understood that along with learning more about the fields she was looking to start a career in, getting real-world experience in SPOs would allow her to diversify her skill sets and open up a wide range of opportunities.

“I wanted a major that allowed me options and didn’t pigeonhole me into a single career path,” she says. She declared accounting as her major while leaving room for other scholarly pursuits.

After taking management information systems (MIS) class Honors Digital Systems, where she learned the role of information systems and digital platforms in business and how digital products are conceived, designed, secured and deployed, Listman found she enjoyed coding and building software applications. She decided to add MIS as a second major.

“The combination of accounting and MIS expand my career options considering how technology is important in every aspect of business,” Listman says.

This summer, Listman interned with Mazars USA LLP, an independent member firm of Mazars Group, an international audit, tax and advisory organization that operates in over 90 countries. She worked in their rotational internship program, which gave her the opportunity to shadow professionals in the audit, tax and advisory areas. Next summer, she plans to intern at Deloitte in their risk and financial advisory practice.

Looking forward to the future, Listman imagines working in the accounting field while using her knowledge of the tech industry to support career growth and opportunity. “I see myself working at a public accounting firm—working at the intersection of business and emerging technologies and consulting in those spaces,” she says.

Going into her third year this fall, Listman offers advice on how incoming students can find success and carve out space at the Fox School.

“I’d tell incoming freshmen to get involved in SPOs because it’s the best way to network, get internships, and meet people in your major. I’d also tell them to put themselves out there and try to get leadership positions because that can be an extremely rewarding experience.”
